Zion is nothing short of magical. The iron rich sandstone creates a dramatic red backdrop for landscape photographs. It’s hard not to be inspired when you walk amongst the towering walls of Zion.
On the first morning of the workshop we took the shuttle to a gorgeous cascade with three iconic sandstone peaks in the background. I showed the group a variety of compositions and gave some helpful camera setting suggestions. The group really worked the scene for quite some time. After a while it was time to move on to our next subject. The second shoot was a curvy bonsai tree growing out of the rock. Before we knew it the morning was almost gone and it was time for a mid-day break. The second portion of the day included grabbing our waterproof bibs for the following day and a down river shot of the virgin river for sunset.
The next morning, we woke up early to catch the first shuttle bus to The Narrows. We were some of the first people to step foot into the river. The water was a little higher than normal but the group was up to the task. We hiked deep into the narrows to photograph reflected light on the canyon walls. This workshop is truly an adventure. The group got some fantastic shots in the narrows and had a blast taking them. At the end of the day we returned our gear to the outfitter and had some warm Mexican food to celebrate.
Until next time,
Mike and the rest of the Aperture Academy Team!
